The objective is to transition stored energy, in forms other than electricity, back into electrical energy when needed, acting similarly to a large "power bank."

Thanks to strong policy support and continuous technological advancements, China’s energy storage industry has made significant progress. In 2022, the cumulative installed capacity of China's energy storage reached 59.8 GW, an increase of 29.72% compared to the previous year.

New energy storage, compared to traditional pumped hydro storage, offers greater flexibility in site selection, shorter construction timelines, rapid and flexible response capabilities, and diverse functional characteristics. These advantages are making it increasingly integrated into every aspect of the power system, fundamentally changing the operating characteristics of the traditional power grid. As a critical component of stable and secure power systems, new energy storage will also reshape energy systems and power grid operations. In 2022, the cumulative installed capacity of new energy storage in China was 12.7 GW, with an impressive year-on-year growth of 121.6%.

Future Energy Storage Requirements

In the future, energy storage technologies will need to meet demands for scalability, high safety, low cost, long lifespan, and geographical flexibility.
